Douglas Eugene Hughes, Sr. transitioned peacefully on March 7, surrounded by his loving family. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on March 24, 1951, to Laura and Harold Hughes, Doug lived a life of deep faith and quiet strength. A faithful servant of God and respected Deacon, he served as a pillar in his community while remaining a devoted son, husband, brother, and father. He approached life with enthusiasm as a stalwart church member, a passionate tennis player and former semipro, and a joyful participant in pickleball and golf, inspiring those around him through his example and steadfast spirit.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Harold Hughes, and his brothers, Joe Mays and Thomas Hughes. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Hughes; brothers Mertland Hughes (Barbara) and Marvin Shahid; sister Kae Mays; children Anthony Ganaway (Angel), Nicole Briscoe, Erroll Wheeler, Terroll Wheeler (Dujuana), and Douglas Hughes, Jr. (Katrina); grandchildren Ashley Briscoe-Reynolds, Shatara Riley, Erroll Wheeler, Jr., Rayna Madox, Jameisha Mosby, Reyna Ganaway, Ellington Hughes, Avia Hughes, and Isla Hughes; great-grandchildren Olympia Reynolds, Eleanor Reynolds, Eiya Wheeler, Emir Wheeler, Elijah Wheeler, Kenny Demo, and Riley Allan; his beloved Uncle Obie Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will carry forward his enduring legacy.
