December 2, 1925— March 13, 2026
Toms River, NJ
Dorothy Rose Kraus passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, at the age of 100 years, 3 months and 11 days. Born on December 2, 1925, to Christopher and Mae Couch in Elizabeth, she was the oldest of four sisters. Dorothy lost her mother at a young age and made the difficult choice to leave school to help support her family, an early act of selflessness that defined her character and revealed the quiet strength, determination, and generosity that guided her throughout her long life.
In 1947 she married the love of her life, Otto Kraus. Together they built a home in Elizabeth, later settling in Clark and eventually retiring to Toms River. Dorothy was an avid reader who was rarely seen without a book, cherished classic films, and found quiet joy in working on word search puzzles. She remained mentally sharp, kept up with the world around her, and possessed a remarkable memory for even the smallest details.
She was preceded in death by her husband Otto after 52 years of marriage. Dorothy is survived by her son Richard Kraus (Jean), her daughter Loraine Gurval (Michael), her grandchildren Richard Kraus, Melissa Muir (Ned), Megan Sliker (John), Michael Gurval (Heather), and Lea Gurval, and her great-grandchildren Riley, Kara, Ella, Katie, and McLeod, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Her family was her greatest joy.
She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, resilience, kindness, and the deep care she showed to everyone around her. Her life stood as a testament to perseverance and devotion, leaving behind a legacy of love and strength that will continue to guide her family for generations.
