Dorothy Nell Johnson

March 9, 1938 March 6, 2026

Baytown, TX

Dorothea Nell Johnson, lovingly known as Dorothy, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, in Baytown, Texas, at the age of 87, surrounded by her loving family.

Dorothy was born on March 9, 1938, in Hays, Texas, to Lonnie James Blaylock and Jewel Marylea Reed. Her father misspelled her name as “Dorothea” on her birth certificate, but she later changed it to Dorothy—the name by which she was known and loved throughout her life.

Dorothy was raised in Hays County, Texas, on a cattle ranch. Growing up in a close-knit rural community instilled in her the strong values of family, hard work, and devotion that guided her throughout her life. She attended school in Hays County and, on June 21, 1955, married the love of her life, James Lamar Johnson.

The couple began their life together in Austin, Texas, where they started their family and welcomed three children: James Eugene Johnson, Douglas Lee Johnson, and Cheryel Lee Johnson.

In 1965, Dorothy and James moved their family to Houston, Texas, where their 4th child, Tammy Denise Johnson, was born. They continued raising their children and later enjoyed watching their family grow with the addition of many grandchildren.

Dorothy and James later fulfilled their dream of building a home in Onalaska, Texas, near Lake Livingston. Their home, with its large backyard garden, became a place filled with peace, laughter, and cherished family gatherings. After retiring, they moved there permanently and spent many happy years enjoying the quiet lake life and welcoming visits from their beloved children and grandchildren on weekends and holidays.

While her grandchildren and great-grandchildren remember her as caring, loving, funny, and kind, her friends and children also fondly describe her as feisty, sassy, and never afraid to speak her mind.

Dorothy was the heart of her family—a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and cherished matriarch who kept everyone connected. Her warmth, strength, and unwavering love will be remembered by all who knew her.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie James Blaylock and Jewel Marylea Reed; her beloved husband, James Lamar Johnson; and her grandson, Kenneth Scott Dean.

She is survived by her children: James E. Johnson and wife Flo; Douglas Lee Johnson and wife Tonya; Cheryel Norfolk and partner Lawrence Downhour; and Tammy McGhee and husband Russell. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jeremy, Douglas James, Michael, Chad, Casey, Shannon, Morgan, Caleb, Jessica, Heather, and Coleman, along with many great-grandchildren and numerous other cherished family members and friends.

Dorothy’s life was defined by her deep love for family and the joy she found in bringing everyone together. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Graveside services will be held in Dorothy’s honor Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at the Magnolia Cemetery in Onalaska, Texas with Bro. Chris Knox officiating.
