Dorothy Jones ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Wilson Funeral Home - El Reno on Mar. 10, 2026.Dorothy Louise Jones passed in her sleep at 5:50am, Sunday. 8 March 2026, at Cottonwood Nursing Home in Chickasha, Oklahoma.Born Dorothy Louise Kubala on October 31, 1927, at home to Joseph Carl Kubala and Millie Mary Kubala (nee Strouhal). She was the youngest of five Kubala children; Joseph F, Jannie O, Bennie B, and Lillie M – then after seven years, Dorothy. Her parents and siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, much of her family and so many friends have all predeceased her; as have grandchildren, Kyra Sowter, James Bishop, and Marco Solis.Dorothy was a graduate of El Reno High School, Class of 1945. At one of the many popular dances held in El Reno in that era, well chaperoned by Bennie and Lillie, she met John Edward Jones, 9 months her senior, and was swept off her feet. They loved dancing and became fast friends. In early fall 1944, Dorothy and John, both seventeen, slipped off to the Justice of The Peace in Okarche and were told – no, you're too young. On January 15, 1945, Dorothy and John, along with John's 20-year-old sister Lula Mae as witness, tried again and were wed. It is said her parents weren't too happy about this and John, who turned eighteen on 27 January surprisingly received "Greetings From The President Of The United States" very shortly thereafter.John was inducted into Uncle Sam's Army on 17 April 1945 and sent off to his basic training in Arkansas leaving his bride at home and high school. When the train transporting troops from Arkansas to California for transportation to the Asiatic Pacific Theater did a whistle stop in El Reno, Dorothy slipped onto the train with John and went to California for a short period before John shipped out, then returned to her family home to finish high school and await his return.John's unit was aboard ship enroute to participate in the occupation of Japan when the war ended in September 1945 but was diverted to Korea where he served as a Military Policeman for more than a year. John received an Honorable Discharge at Camp Beale, California, on 29 December 1946 and hurried home to El Reno to begin his life with his bride, Dorothy.John and Dorothy were lifelong El Reno residents of El Reno. She was a homemaker, John worked at Fort Reno as a Horse and Mule Trainer, then at El Reno Flour Mill, then at Tinker Field until retirement. In February 1949, they had a daughter, Mary "Kathy" Kathleen; and then in December 1959, they had a son, Steve Edward.John and Dorothy enjoyed traveling, often going to South Texas, Colorado, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, and a bit of everywhere. Neither having flown, in 1971, they flew to Germany to visit Kathy and her family, serving in the US Army. They visited Paris, much of France, Bavaria including Berchtesgaden and Garmisch, seeing the Alps, Neuschwanstein, and many castles, vineyards and river drives along the Seine, Rhine, Danube rivers.Dorothy lived a good life, outliving her friends, family, and all those she enjoyed in her youth. She leaves behind her son Steve, grandsons Sterling and partner Ashley and great granddaughter, Delta, and grandson Shawnee; her daughter Kathy Bishop and husband John and their children – Jamie Courtney and great grandchildren, Lyndon and his wife Rachel, and Myia Courtney and great great grandchildren Bentley and Scarlett; Kari Tison and husband, Wesley, and great grandchildren Tyler Sowter and wife Stephanie, and Nicole Tison; Will Rinehart and wife Amy, and great grandsons, Tanner, Cameron, and Cody; and Natalie Litchfield and great grandsons, Hunter and Hayden; Roy and great grandsons Roy Jr and great great daughter Phoenix, Chris and wife Asia and great great granddaughter Rowan, Kaylub and wife Courtney, and Tom and partner Korina and great grandson Conor, and Tori Blottie and husband Phil and great grandsons Aaron, Nathan and Max.A funeral service to honor the life of Dorothy will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2026 at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel.
