Dorothy Burwell ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home on Mar. 10, 2026.Dorothy Elaine (Meloy) Burwell, 91, of Princeton, NJ, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026.Dorothy (Dottie) was born on April 16, 1934, in New Haven, CT, and was raised in Woodmont, CT, where she enjoyed the beautiful shoreline as well as boating, sailing, and fishing in the waters of Long Island Sound with her family and adventurous friends.Dottie also met her future husband, Wayne Burwell, in dance class as a teenager.Dottie graduated from the Grace-New Haven Hospital School of Nursing in 1955 and married Wayne on September 3, 1955. Dottie and Wayne eventually settled in Wethersfield, CT, in 1964, where they raised their family. Dottie had many hobbies and loved gardening, sewing, playing cards, reading, and spending time with her friends and neighbors in Wethersfield. She embraced many new activities and sports, including camping, tennis, skiing, and golf, so she could participate in the active lifestyle enjoyed by her husband and children. In fact, Dottie was often seen driving her boys and neighborhood friends to many an early morning or late-night hockey practice.After nearly 45 years in Wethersfield, Dottie and Wayne retired to Green Hill, RI, and Palm Beach Gardens, FL, where they spent nearly 25 years together. Dottie resided in Princeton, NJ, for the past six years.Dottie was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Clara Smith Meloy; her husband, Wayne G. Burwell; and her sister, Beverly Cavalier. She is survived by her sons, Greg Burwell (Jane), David Burwell (Sharon), Don Burwell, and Bill Burwell (Amy); her seven grandchildren, Louis, Benjamin, Eliza, Matthew, Daniel, Grace, and Mia; her nephew, Steven; her nieces, Diana andHolly; her brother-in-law, Jay; and several cousins.A celebration of life service will be held by the family.Arrangements were by the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home 40 Vandeventer Avenue Princeton, NJ08542.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
