Dorothy “Dot” Burkholder Steele, 100, of Greensburg, died at home surrounded by family on March 8, 2026. She was born November 11, 1925, in Pleasant Unity, the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Carrie H. Ritenour Burkholder. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg, PA and the Bell Telephone Pioneers. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Bell Telephone company of Greensburg, PA, starting as a switchboard operator during WWII. Dot was an avid and lucky bingo player, a wonderful cook, and an amazing baker. She was especially appreciated for her rhubarb pies and Christmas cookies. She will be terribly missed by her family, her special bingo friend, Jan, and all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, David K. Steele; son D. Scott Steele; brothers, J. Kenneth Burkholder, Thomas B. (June) Burkholder, Jr., John W. (Jack) Burkholder; and sister, Helen Burkholder Walton Sharp. She is survived by daughter, Jeanne S. Smith; son-in-law, Delver B. Smith; daughter-in-law, Donna (Metz) Steele; and sister-in-law Hazel Steele. She is also survived by granddaughters, Felicia A. (Smith) Fosmire (Michael), Tain C. (Smith) Schlesman Short (William), and Melissa E. (Smith) Daniels (Matt); great-grandchildren, Adria J. (Schlesman) Crusan (Chandler), Cambrie J. Short (Zack Sieg), and Carys A. Short, Henry Fosmire and Corey Fosmire; a great-great granddaughter, Gianna Crusan, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Sunday, March 15th from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm at the KEPPLE-GRAFT Funeral Home 524 N. Mail Street, Greensburg. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 16, 2026, at 10:30am in the First Presbyterian Church 300 S. Main Street, Greensburg with Rev. Dr. Martin Ankrum officiating. Interment will follow at the Westmoreland Memorial Park, Greensburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg or to a personal charity of choice.
