Dorothy A. Heustis
Deary, ID
Dorothy A. Heustis, born on January 26, 1933, in Hamilton, Montana, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at Aspen Park of Cascadia in Moscow, Idaho. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dorothy lived a life centered on her family and her community. She spent her early years in the Moscow area, where she attended school and graduated from Moscow High School.
Her working life reflected her nurturing spirit. She cared for several families in Moscow as a house cleaner and spent many years cooking at the Mount Deary Cafe, the Corner Cafe in Deary, and the Harvard Cafe. She met her husband, Olliver Heustis, at the New Hong Kong restaurant in Moscow after a local ball game. They married on July 1, 1950, in a memorable four-ring ceremony shared with friends Floyd and Joann Hatley. Together they made their home in Moscow, Avery, and Clarkia before settling in Deary.
Dorothy was an avid bowler who traveled across the country for tournaments and once found herself on stage at the Grand Ole Opry with her teammates. She was deeply involved in the Morning Star Rebekah Lodge in Deary, where she was installed as a member on November 17, 1965. She served in numerous leadership roles, including Noble Grand, and advised the Theta Rho group alongside Doris Hansen. For 34 years, from 1989 to 2023, she volunteered at the Deary Adventist Thrift Store, offering her time and warm smile to all who came through its doors.
She cherished family camping trips, especially those along the St. Joe River. Dorothy is survived by her son, Randy Heustis of Deary, Idaho, and her daughter, Sue (Phil) of Moscow, as well as her brothers, Skip Knapik of Kennewick and David Knapik of Moscow. She leaves behind grandchildren Jacob (Angela) Anderson, Joshua (Marci) Anderson, Jessica (Ryan) Hughes, Carrisa Dawn Heustis, and Kelsey Nicole Heustis, and great-grandchildren Connor, Jocelyn, Marcus, Olivia, Kynlee, and Cooper, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bill, and her sister Jean.
