October 13, 1947— March 11, 2026
Virginia Beach, VA
Doris Kimmel Johantgen, 78, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on March 11, 2026. Born on October 13, 1947, in Rochester, New York, to George and Betty Kimmel, she graduated from Brockport High School, where she met her husband, Hank Johantgen. After attending the Geneva School of Practical Nursing, Doris worked as a nurse at various facilities and doctors’ offices in New York, Virginia, and Florida.
In 1992, Doris combined her “Window Dressings” stores with her newest acquisition, “My Blind Spot,” where her sewing, business, and artistic talents came together to create unique interior designs. Known for her packed Subaru, her love of cats, and her honesty and impeccable reputation, she worked closely with her beloved niece, Leigh O’Brien Wall, before retiring and selling the business to her. In her later years, she expanded her sewing skills into quilting, producing humorous wall hangings, colorful decorative totes, and large bed coverlets. After several floods, she and Hank built a beautiful new home, which Doris largely designed and lovingly decorated, with a special passion for seasonal decorations and her hand-sewn personalized Christmas stockings.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, George Kimmel, and his wife, Audrey; her sister-in-law, Lavena Kimmel; and her parents-in-law, “Doc” and Anne Johantgen. She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Hank; her siblings, Joyce O’Brien, Kathy Adams (husband George), and Charles Kimmel; and her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Amy LaPietra (husband Franco), Beth Verde, Meg Johantgen, Peter Johantgen (wife Clara), and Michael Johantgen. She also cherished many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who brought her great joy.
Doris will be remembered for her creativity, sense of humor, and the love she shared with family and friends. She will be deeply missed.
