Preserve forever →Donald Slater "Don" Koenig
February 13, 1979— March 6, 2026
Towson, MD
Donald Slater Koenig passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, at the age of 47, following a long and courageous battle with cardiac sarcoidosis.
Born on February 13, 1979, in Towson, Maryland, Don grew up in Baltimore County. He graduated from Loyola Blakefield in 1997 and later attended Towson University, where he studied broadcasting and developed his lifelong passion for radio, music, and storytelling. Though he built a successful career as a Systems Engineer for Johns Hopkins, he was beloved throughout the Baltimore area for his work with WIYY 98 Rock. He began as a morning show producer for Kirk, Mark, and Lopez before becoming an on-air personality known as “Cap’n Don.” His quick wit, playful humor, and genuine presence made him a favorite among listeners and friends alike.
Above all, Don was a devoted husband and father whose greatest joy was spending time with his wife and daughters. He spoke with pride and love about his girls to anyone who would listen. He was known for his deep passion for music, his extensive collection of records, arcade games, pinball machines, and hats, and for the constant stream of pun-filled jokes that defined his personality. Loyal, generous, and warm-hearted, Don created community and laughter wherever he went. He found great meaning and renewed creative energy through his involvement in the NDP community, particularly with Father’s Folly, where he formed cherished friendships that supported him throughout his illness.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Amanda Koenig (née Miller); his daughters, Hailey and Isabel “Izzy”; his parents, Dr. William Martin Koenig Jr. and Kathryn Koenig (née Towson); his brother, William Martin Koenig III; his sister-in-law, Kristy Koenig; his brother-in-law, Ryan Miller; his sisters-in-law, Teresa Miller, Francis Miller, and Margaret Miller; his niece, Jessica Miller; his niece, Charlotte Koenig; and his nephew, William “Willy” Koenig. He will be remembered for his humor, kindness, music, and the many friendships he formed throughout his life. His voice, laughter, and spirit touched everyone who knew him, and his memory will be cherished always.
