Donald Shiflett, Sr., 86, of Bayard, West Virginia, passed away on March 10, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on February 20, 1940, in Weaver, West Virginia, he was the son of the late John Dallas and Bertha Juanita (Robey) Shiflett.

A dedicated coal miner, Don spent more than 32 years underground with Island Creek Coal Company. His hard work, reliability, and quiet strength earned him the deep respect of his fellow workers. A proud member of the United Mine Workers of America, he embodied the values of solidarity, perseverance, and brotherhood throughout his life. In his free time, he found joy in fishing his favorite spots, hunting in the hills, reading good books, and writing his own stories. His words and gentle wit remain cherished by those who knew him best.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Brenda D. Shiflett, Danny Shiflett, Sheena Shiflett, Robert J. Shiflett, Shawn E. Shiflett, Timothy A. Whitacre, Malisha C. Gay, and Dusty R. Whitacre, along with numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Juanita J. (Wegman) Shiflett; his children, Donald R. Shiflett, Jr., and Janice Jean Hartman; and a grandson, Jamie L. Shiflett.
