Donald R. Spencer Obituary - Winkel Funeral Home

Donald Robert Spencer of Grand Rapids passed away Saturday, March 7, 2026, after a two-decade long bout with several illnesses. He was born June 18, 1957, in Kalamazoo, the son of William and Joyce (Thayer) Spencer. Don graduated from Otsego High School in 1975 and earned his bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University. He went on to spend an award-winning career in public administration, working for the City of Grand Rapids where he served as Water System Manager retiring due to his chronic illnesses. His dedication to his work was a testament to his commitment to serving his community, a role he held with both esteem and pride. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was also an avid mechanic, finding great joy in tinkering around his garage. Some of his favorite memories often involved time spent at the family cottage on Lake Michigan near Leland. Surviving are his wife, Lisa Wood, son, Nolan (Mila) Spencer; grandchildren, Odin and London Spencer; daughter, Maxine (Ash) Wren; his brother, David (Ingrid) Spencer and dog, Dexter. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Don's family from 1-3PM, Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.
