Donald R Harris

Donald Ray Harris was born on March 31, 1942, in McAdoo, Texas, to Fay and Charlie Harris. He passed away on March 13, 2026, at the age of 83.

A 1960 graduate of McAdoo High School, Donald was a member of the state basketball championship team that year. He married his high school sweetheart, Rita Ann Vanmeter, on January 21, 1961, in McAdoo. A kind, hardworking, and deeply family-oriented man, Donald was known for his everyday uniform of jeans, a denim shirt, cowboy hat, and boots, and for wearing a suit on Sundays. He loved the Lord, farmed cotton, and cherished his cows. He and Rita built a life together and raised four sons: Robby, Lance, Chuck, and Shad.

Donald was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of McAdoo and later First Baptist Church of Spur, where he served as a teacher and deacon in both congregations. He also served his community as school board president for two different schools and in many other capacities. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rita, of McAdoo; his sons Robby and wife Jeannie of Aspermont, Lance and wife Amy of Spur, Chuck of McAdoo, and Shad of Spur; 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy; and two sisters, Wilma Ward and Tommie Davis.
