Donald “Bud” Owens, a cherished family man, respected engineer, and passionate model airplane enthusiast, passed away on March 15, 2026, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 98. Born on January 4, 1928, Bud was a source of wisdom and joy for everyone who knew him.
The son of Ralph and Arletta Owens, Bud was preceded in death by his son Jon Owens, half-brother Lambert Owens, half-sisters Margaret Owens and Lois Owens, and his lifelong best friend Bud Allen. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sandi Owens, with whom he shared a deep and enduring love. Together they raised son Richard Owens and daughters Susie Barton and Susan Wise (Douglas). Bud took great pride in his grandchildren Tranace, Justin, Marissa, Megan, Morgan, Callie, Shawn, Crystal, and Alan, as well as his many great-grandchildren.
A graduate of Carnegie Tech in Pennsylvania, Bud enjoyed a long career as an aeronautical and mechanical engineer. His work designing baggage systems for airports earned him the admiration of his colleagues. After living in Pennsylvania and Ocala, he made his home in Dothan, where he continued to leave a lasting impression in the model industry. In his free time, Bud found great happiness flying model airplanes, a hobby that filled him with childlike wonder and allowed him to share his knowledge with others.
Bud’s faithful dachshund, Opie, remained his constant companion, reflecting the loyalty and warmth that defined him throughout his life. He will be remembered for a life rich in love, laughter, innovation, and the simple pleasures that brought him joy.
