Elk Mountain, WY

Donald C. Johnson, known to most as Buster, was born September 13, 1946, to Donald S. and Marguerite Johnson. He passed away at his home in Elk Mountain, Wyoming, on March 3, 2026.

Buster was born, raised, and worked in the Hanna and Elk Mountain area ever since birth. Born into what would be a typical ranch family of the times, he had 5 siblings, Caroline, Schoen, Pete, Ara, and Jimmy. He attended school in a one room schoolhouse at the ranch, as well as in town, eventually graduating from HEM in 1965. Shortly after graduation Buster was drafted by the Army where he would go on to serve two terms in Vietnam. After coming back home from the war he met Sheri Johnson and eventually married her in Elk Mountain in 1971. Together they built a family in the area that consisted of three kids, Ken, Chad, and Schoena. Initially working at the Palm’s Home Ranch and then moving back into Elk Mountain in the mid 70’s where they still live today. The move to town was when Buster started working at the Wyoming DOT where he would later retire in 2004.

When he wasn’t working Buster lived his life through his growing kids and family around the area. Often times at the ranch or in the mountains he enjoyed hunting, fishing and actively participating in sports and other local activities. He was also active in the community through the Fire Department, 4-H, and Hunters Safety where he helped in leadership roles for years. His eventual retirement coincided well with the birth of his grandkids which allowed him and Sheri to travel the world as his kids all left the area for work and raising their families. He was a proud father and grandfather of ten grandchildren and one great grand-daughter.

Buster is survived by his wife, Sheri Johnson, sons Ken (Doreen) Johnson and Chad (Elizabeth) Johnson, daughter Schoena (Jason) Strudwick and their kids and grandchild; Zach, Kenna, Wyatt, Emma, Brody, Claire, Kane, Marley, Drew, Molly, and Alanna. In addition to his kids and theirs, he’s survived by his brothers Pete and Jimmy as well as his sister Ara.

A celebration of life will be held in Elk Mountain at the Fire Department on Tuesday, March 10th.
