Donald "Donnie" Carlson

Donald "Donnie" Carlson I, passed away peacefully on Wednesday. March 4, 2026, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota with family by his side. He touched the lives of many through his dedication to education and his community, leaving a legacy that will be cherished by his family and friends.

A Memorial Service in honor of Donnie will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN, with Pastor Amber Arlien officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service on Friday, March 13, 2026 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also take place one hour prior to the memorial service on Saturday, at Johnson Funeral Service. Burial will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date.

Donnie was born on July 28, 1939, in Strandquist, Minnesota, the son of Oscar and Jeanette (Onger) Carlson. He was baptized The Episcopal Church (Assembly of God) and confirmed at the Pentecostal Church (Gospel Tabernacle). Donnie attended school in Strandquist High School graduating with the class of 1957.

Donnie pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Bemidji State University, which led him to a fulfilling career teaching social studies in Strandquist, MN. His passion for knowledge and imparting it to the younger generation extended beyond the classroom as he also drove bus, ensuring the safe transportation of school children to their sports activities, further shaping their lives.

In addition to his teaching career, Donnie worked for Robertson Lumber in Karlstad, MN, and was employed by Super America, showcasing his strong work ethic and commitment to his community. His contributions did not stop at his professional endeavors; he served on the Karlstad volunteer fire department, demonstrating his bravery and dedication to public service.

At a dance at Florian, MN in 1964, Donnie met his future wife, Evangeline “Vangie” Larson. After a brief long-distance courtship while Donnie was stationed in Korea, the couple married on April 24, 1965, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Karlstad. To this union six wonderful children were born.

A proud veteran, Donnie served in the United States Army. His sense of duty and country further exemplified his character and compassion for others as he was an American Legion member for 60 years and was Post Commander of the Sam R. Hougard Post #466 for 25+ years.

Donnie was deeply invested in his community, being an active member of the cemetery association in Strandquist, MN, and a longtime member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, where he fostered relationships and contributed to the spiritual life of the community.

Donnie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed mowing the lawn, took pride in his skill as a golfer, and loved watching sports—especially basketball, a game he was also passionate about coaching. Donnie’s favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing, and attending races in Greenbush. Above all, he cherished spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, forming bonds that will carry forth his memory.

Donnie leaves behind a loving family, including his children, Xan (James) Stephenson, Kim (Steve Boe) Carlson, David Carlson, Cindy (Todd) Mork, Donald (Tabithah) Carlson II, and Ron (Chelsae) Carlson. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Erin Pearson, Deanne (Chad) Olson, Travis Mork, Luke Mork, Catrina Stephenson, Logan Stephenson, Gage (Carlson) Sava, Caden Boe, Reilly Carlson, and Arielle Carlson, alongside his great-grandchildren, Alivia, Ava, Daniel, and Landon; and many other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Vangie; his parents; granddaughter, Chesney Carlson; brothers, Ron Carlson, Jerry Carlson and Merlin Carlson; and sister-in-law Marlene Carlson

Donnie's life was one built on service, love, and dedication. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, a testament to a life well-lived.
