Preserve forever →Dénes Kassai
San Pedro, CA
Dénes Kassai, aged 72, passed away peacefully at home on March 5, 2026. Born on November 4, 1953, in Budapest to parents Dénes and Marta Kassai, he lived a life marked by resilience, positivity, and deep devotion to those he loved. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kathryn Krippahne Kassai, their four children—Denis Kassai, Gina Kassai Bland, Jeanette Kassai Brock, and Mike Kassai—and three grandchildren, Sammy, Madeline, and Holly. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Marta Kassai.
Never one to follow convention, Dénes always marched to the beat of his own drum. At 17, he and his family escaped communist Hungary by train, eventually flying to California in 1972 to start anew. His early talent in mathematics, highlighted by a second-place finish in a national high-school competition in Germany, guided his path through Harvey Mudd, UC-Irvine, and UC-Berkeley. He built a distinguished career in aerospace engineering, specializing in fiber optics and space telescopes while holding top-secret clearance. His professional roles included positions at Hughes, TRW, Northrop, and McDonnell Douglas, as well as serving as an adjunct professor at Marymount College. In 1988, he and Kathryn co-founded Praxis Physical Therapy, a thriving clinic in San Pedro, California.
Dénes embraced life with unbridled enthusiasm. He loved cooking, particularly soups, and found joy in sailing—which is how he first met Kathryn in the British Virgin Islands—coaching his children’s soccer teams, swimming in the Pacific, hiking Mt. Whitney, flying a propeller plane through the Grand Canyon with Kathryn, skiing, visiting Catalina Island, teaching math to his children, engaging in philosophical discussions, and traveling to destinations across Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Antarctica. He cherished gerbera daisies and held profound gratitude for the love and joy his family and friends brought him throughout his life. The memories shared of Dénes will remain a lasting part of all who knew him.
