Diane Gudel Lapidus

Diane Gudel Lapidus, 89, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on March 15, 2026.

Diane was born in Atlanta, GA, to Sylvia and Malvin Gudel, both of blessed memory. She graduated from W. Grady High School and attended The University of Texas at Austin where she studied elementary education. During her sophomore year, she met the love of her life, Harold (Hal) Lapidus, at a Hillel event, and they were married in 1956. Following Hal’s military service in Roswell, NM, they settled in Houston. Their daughter Lynn Lapidus was born in 1961, and daughter Karen Lapidus Edelman completed their family a year later. Diane enjoyed being involved in many of her daughters’ activities including serving as their Brownie Troop Leader and teaching religious school at Temple Emanu El for many years.

Diane supported Hal as he established his industrial tool supply company – Houston Tool & Hoist, in the 1970s. For many years, she worked at Congregation Beth Yeshurun’s Jack Segal Academy, serving as the After School Enrichment Coordinator. She relished not only the daily interaction with the pre-school students as well as the relationships developed with their parents. She and her sister Judy, avid needle pointers, owned The Queen's Needle on Fondren in the 1980’s and helped many stitchers flourish in their craft with beautiful canvases and guidance for novices and experts.

She and Hal were longstanding members of Congregation Emanu El, Chancellor’s Tennis Center and enjoyed entertaining friends and family in their home. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in 2014, before Hal’s death from brain cancer. They traveled the world and enjoyed trips spanning from Venezuela, Argentina, and England, to Canada, Mexico and Italy. Diane enjoyed playing Mahjong and was an avid jogger before being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 45. She lived a full and vibrant life while battling the effects of this disease for more than 44 years with dignity and grace—never complaining about what she couldn’t achieve but instead, enjoying the accomplishments of those around her. She and Hal volunteered at Ronald McDonald House for many years, planning events and bringing special treats for the pediatric patients and their families who lived at RMHH while receiving medical treatments. Diane was not known for her culinary skills, but her family will miss her green Jell-o mold immensely.

Diane is survived by daughters Lynn Lapidus and Karen Edelman (Mark), her grandchildren, Jared Edelman and Anya Edelman, sister, Judy Introligator, brother-in-law, Albert Lapidus, nieces and nephews, Amy Introligator, Eric Introligator, Lori Landes, Mark Lapidus, Elyse Jarvis, and Jill Lambert.

A private burial was held at Emanu El Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Diane’s memory with a donation to The National MS Society, www.nationalmssociety.org, or Alexander Jewish Family Service, www.alexanderjfs.org.
