Dennis William Metzen
December 14, 1942— March 8, 2026
Wellington, KS
Dennis William Metzen, affectionately known as “Squig,” passed away on March 8, 2026. Born on December 14, 1942, in Wellington, Kansas, Dennis was an ornery yet deeply loved man who brought laughter and warmth to those around him. Known for his wit, reliability, dedication, and wonderful sense of humor, he served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, earning a Purple Heart. A lifelong patriot, he was also a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
A farmer by trade, Dennis had a sharp eye for crops and enjoyed driving the country roads to check on the fields. He was a gifted butcher, remembered for his years at the Mayfield Grocery Locker. An avid collector, he took pride in his extensive collection of Hesston rodeo belt buckles and valuable coins. He found great joy in sports, cheering loudly for his grandchildren at their events and savoring a Mayfield fast-pitch softball game paired with a classic Mayfield hamburger. A man of deep faith, he attended St. Anthony & St. Rose Catholic Church his entire life, where his devotion and his love for his grandchildren remained the cornerstones of his world.
He is survived by his sons, Gregory (Elizabeth) Metzen and Phillip (Krystle) Metzen; his grandchildren, Jackson, Ava, Tanner, and Conner Metzen; his brothers, Raymond (Theresa) Metzen, Ronald (Linda) Metzen, and John (Susan) Metzen; his sisters, Darlene Metzen and Sheryl Sheppard; his brother-in-law, Darle Robinson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Barbara Metzen, and his sisters, Marilyn (Albert) Cook, Elizabeth (Danny) Lucas, and Patricia Robinson.
