Dennis Scott Obituary March 2, 2026 - Schaffer Funeral Service, LLC.

Chicago, IL

Dennis Scott was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 24, 1942 to Addie and Elijah Scott. Raised in the Robert Brooks housing development, known as “The Village,” he attended Riis Elementary School and Crane High School. After graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served in the Vietnam War and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He spoke often of his role as “Lead Man,” guiding his platoon through intense battles, including an incident in which he drove a tank over an active grenade. Wounded in action, he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Though he returned home carrying the lasting effects of his wartime experiences, Dennis overcame those challenges with quiet strength. He professed his faith in Christ at an early age and lived as a kind, generous, easygoing, and loving man who carried himself with the grace of a true gentleman. Peaceful yet courageous, he possessed a sharp wit and gentle humor that brought laughter to those around him. He loved music and dancing, becoming an accomplished Chicago stepper who practiced his moves with his younger sisters. In later years he achieved sobriety, worked steadily, and fulfilled a longtime dream by becoming a published author.

Dennis was preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla Davis Scott, his brother Michael Scott, his sisters Patricia Brisker and Barbara Scott, and his parents. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters Doretha Hall and Keona Scott; his sisters Phyllis Gary and Shirley Aikens; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends who will always remember the warmth and valor of his life.
