Dennis J. Garbas

Dennis J. Garbas

March 2, 1955 March 6, 2026

Knox, IN

Dennis John Garbas, affectionately known as “Pap” to his family and loved ones, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 7, 2026. Born on July 2, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, he spent the majority of his life in Knox, Indiana, where he raised his family and became a well-known and respected member of the community.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and John Garbas; his sisters, Janice and Joann; his brother, John; and his beloved dog, Luke. He is survived by Sherry Pinney, the mother of their three children: Shannon (Jerry Stewart), Jason (Jessi Garbas), and Michael (Cassie Garbas). He was the proud grandfather of Daniel “DJ” (Ally Hamilton) and Courtney (Kenny Pfost), along with many other grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who brought him great joy.

A gifted mechanic and automotive body specialist, Dennis was widely regarded as one of the best in his field. He took pride in transforming vehicles with skill and precision, and he generously passed his knowledge on to his sons Jason and Michael, his grandson DJ, and many others. For more than twenty years he also served his community as a member of the Washington Township Fire Department, reflecting his lifelong willingness to help others.

Dennis lived life on his own terms—strong-minded, determined, and fiercely independent. He loved working on projects, riding his golf cart in any weather, and encouraging spontaneous activity with his family. Whether lending a hand with yard work, burning brush, or tackling whatever needed doing, he approached each task with purpose and taught those around him along the way. He cherished time spent with his grandchildren, especially living with DJ, and found deep comfort in the companionship of his dog Luke.

He faced his final illness with quiet strength, cared for devotedly by his grandchildren DJ and Courtney and surrounded by the love of his children and Sherry. His family takes comfort knowing he is now free from suffering, reunited with Luke and those who went before him, enjoying warm days and the freedom he always treasured. Dennis will be deeply missed by all who knew him, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, lessons, and stories his family will cherish forever.
