Dennis Allen McElhose
April 26, 1952— March 7, 2026
Lawton, MI
Dennis Allen McElhose, a father, brother, and longtime Michigan resident, passed away on March 7, 2026, in Lawton, Michigan, at the age of 73. He was born April 26, 1952, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Dennis lived a life shaped by curiosity and independence. Throughout his working years he was known as a jack of all trades, spending much of his career as a computer programmer and consultant. At different times in his life he also followed his love for the outdoors, including time spent in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula working as a tour guide. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes, and his enthusiasm for it even led to an appearance on a fishing show in Florida.
Those who knew Dennis remember a man with a distinct personality and an easy sense of humor. He had a way of striking up conversations and sharing stories, often leaving people with a laugh or a smile. One of his familiar sayings was “Good Stuff, Maynard,” a phrase that friends and family will remember hearing often.
Dennis proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he held the rank of Sergeant. During his service he earned the Sharpshooter Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
In his quieter moments, Dennis enjoyed western films and television, watching birds at the feeder, and following his favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. He appreciated simple comforts as well, including a good meatloaf, a taste for kimchi, and the enjoyment he found in reading comics.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert McElhose and Helen McElhose (Altman).
Dennis is survived by his daughters, Rachael McElhose and Jennifer Baker; his sister, Debra Yabczanka; and his grandchildren, Kacee Baker, Jason Baker, and Kaitlynn Baker.
His life will be remembered in the stories shared by those who knew him and in the small moments of laughter he brought to others along the way.
