August 16, 1951— March 9, 2026
El Campo, TX
Denise Neel Hlavaty of El Campo passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026. Born in Paducah, Kentucky, on August 16, 1951, to Billy Ray and Norma Jean Neel, she was one of five children and grew up alongside her four brothers, Dennis, Lonnie, Billy, and Troy. The family later moved to Lake Jackson before settling in El Campo during her freshman year of high school, where she remained for the rest of her life.
Denise’s greatest joy was her family. Her only child, Lanise Hlavaty Williams, remembers her as a constant source of love who never missed a moment and was always by her side. Beyond motherhood, Denise found her deepest happiness in her grandson, Weston Williams, whom she adored and loved without reservation. She cherished her family and friends, always ready to do anything for those she held dear. She loved spending time at the bay and was happiest on the water. She took pride in her appearance, enjoyed dancing and singing to music, and was known for her bright, unforgettable smile and her fondness for Whataburger sweet tea.
In 1997, alongside a close friend, Denise co-founded Project Graduation during her daughter’s senior year of high school, and she remained proud that the tradition continues today.
She is survived by her daughter, Lanise Hlavaty Williams; her son-in-law, Tyler Williams; her beloved grandson, Weston Williams; and her brothers, Billy Neel and Troy Neel. She was preceded in death by her parents, Billy Ray and Norma Jean Neel; her brothers, Dennis Neel and Lonnie Neel; and her beloved dog, Ziggy.
