September 29, 1926— February 28, 2026
Marietta, GA
Dene C. Hall was born on the beautiful island of Jamaica on September 29, 1926, in the quiet rural community of Woodlands in the parish of St. Elizabeth. She was one of fourteen children born to her loving parents, the late Amos and Bertha Barrett. She grew up surrounded by the rhythms of island life, strong family bonds, and the enduring values of hard work, kindness, and faith. From those early beginnings, Dene developed the gentle spirit and determined character that would define her throughout her life.
On February 28, 2026, at the age of ninety-nine, Dene Hall peacefully transitioned from this earthly life, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love, perseverance, and generosity. Though she has left this world, the impact she made on the lives of her family, friends, and community continues to shine brightly.
Growing up as the twelfth of fourteen children, Dene learned early the importance of sharing, caring, and supporting those around her. Her childhood years in St. Elizabeth helped shape her into a resilient and compassionate woman. She attended Springfield All Age School, where she discovered a natural love for learning as well as a deep passion for sewing. What began as a simple interest soon grew into a lifelong skill that would later become both a professional and a creative outlet.
As a young woman seeking opportunity and adventure, Dene migrated to the United Kingdom in 1955. During her time there she worked diligently as a seamstress, perfecting her craft and becoming well known for her ability to create beautiful garments. She also developed other skills along the way, including hairdressing, baking, and event planning. Her reputation for reliability and dedication earned her the trust and admiration of those she served.
Dene's creativity flourished through her sewing. She had a remarkable eye for design and detail and often created elegant clothing for special occasions. Friends and members of her community often turned to her for custom-made outfits, especially for formal gatherings and women's social events. Her talent allowed her not only to express herself artistically but also to bring confidence and joy to others who wore her creations.
Dene's heart always remained connected to her homeland. In 1970, she made the decision to return to Jamaica to care for her ailing father. Her return reflected the depth of her devotion to family and her willingness to sacrifice for those she loved.
In 1976 she once again had the urge to migrate, and this time to the United States where she settled in New Jersey. She got involved in volunteer work at the University Hospital in Newark N.J. It was a role she relished, as once again she was helping others. For Dene, service to others was never a burden, it was simply a natural expression of her compassionate heart.
As a woman who loved to travel, Dene was deeply devoted to family, and those travels would take her to the UK, Jamaica, Canada, France, and Mexico. She eventually moved to the state of Georgia. She became a member of the local senior center, where she enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, bingo, crafting, and knitting. She cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and extended relatives. Her home was often filled with the comforting aromas of delicious meals, because cooking was one of her great joys. She took pride in preparing dishes that brought everyone together around the table, creating moments of laughter, storytelling, and connection.
Those who knew Dene remember her as a warm, welcoming, and generous woman. She had a beautiful spirit of hospitality and had a way of making people feel at ease the moment they stepped into her presence. Her laughter was unmistakable-full, joyful, and contagious. Friends and family often spoke about her wonderful sense of humor and the light she brought into every room.
She also had a giving heart. Whether offering guidance, sharing a meal, or lending a listening ear, Dene consistently showed kindness to those around her. Her generosity was not measured in grand gestures, but in the countless small acts of care that touched the lives of many.
Dene leaves behind a loving family, who will continue to honor her memories and carry forward the values she instilled in them. She is lovingly remembered by children, Cleave, Joy, Vincent, Byron, Calvin, and Peter. A sister Imogene Favours, daughters-in-law Elaine, Claudette, and other beloved members of her family, as well as eighteen grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, twelve great-great grandchildren along with nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends whose lives she enriched over the years.
Although her physical presence will be deeply missed, her spirit lives on in the lessons she taught, the love she shared, and the memories that will forever be treasured. Her family takes comfort in knowing that the warmth of her smile, the sound of her laughter, and the kindness of her heart will remain woven into the fabric of their lives.
Today we celebrate not only the years she lived, but the beautiful legacy she leaves behind-a legacy of faith, resilience, compassion, and unconditional love.
May she rest in eternal peace, and may her memory continue to inspire all of us who were blessed to know her.
