Dempsey Ray Carpenter, 84, of Hacker Valley, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026, at his home. Born on August 2, 1941, in Hacker Valley, he was the son of the late Hubert and Georgia Cowger Carpenter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Loyd Carpenter and wife Loretta, and his brother-in-law Kenny Cowger and wife Karen.
A man of Methodist faith, Dempsey spent most of his working life in the woods and sawmills. He found great joy in hunting, fishing, and shooting his bow. He was also a respected potter for nearly fifty years, with his pieces cherished by collectors across the country, including those displayed at the Tamarack in Beckley.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Cowger Carpenter; his son, Leonard Carpenter and wife Rita; his sister, Arvella Moats and husband Richard; his sister-in-law, Kathy Anderson and husband Junior; grandchildren Broc Carpenter and wife Nikki, and Logan Carpenter; great-grandchildren Traey, Mason, and Hannah Carpenter; his beloved puppy Jake; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will carry his memory forward.
