November 10, 1929— March 11, 2026
Birmingham, AL
Delora W. Veal, affectionately known as “Shorty,” passed away on March 11, 2026, at the age of 96. Born in Pisgah, Alabama, she was the youngest and shortest of three sisters, a distinction that earned her the lifelong nickname she carried with quiet humor. Raised in a loving and hardworking family, Delora later moved to Birmingham, where she met and married the love of her life, Clarence Veal. The couple shared 54 years together, enjoying simple pleasures such as playing Pac-Man, Nintendo, and dominos with their family.
An avid reader and passionate gardener, Delora took great delight in tending her vegetable and flower gardens, often spending hours pulling weeds so her plants could thrive. In her later years, her gentle sweetness, kindness, and spirited determination won the hearts of everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Vallie Lee Whisenant, her sister Aileen, her husband Clarence, and their daughter Sandra Kay. Delora is survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her sister Loretta Caldwell, many nieces and nephews, and her cherished lifelong neighbors. Her family and friends will miss her deeply, along with all those whose lives she touched over the years.
