January 30, 1934— March 6, 2026
Sartell, MN
Delano Roosevelt Hagen, known to family and friends as Del, passed away on March 6, 2026, at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center at the age of 92.
Born on January 30, 1934, in Granite Falls, Minnesota, to Melvin and Viola (Luedke) Hagen, Del grew up playing sports before leaving school to ride a freight train west to Washington. There he worked in fruit-packing plants, sending money home to support his mother and siblings. In 1954 he was drafted into the Army alongside his brother Dave and friends from Granite Falls under the buddy system. After his service, he settled in the Minneapolis area before moving to Buffalo, Minnesota, around 1979 to live with his wife Bonnie. They later divorced, and he made his home in Sartell.
A proud member of the VFW and American Legion, Del served with the Honor Guard. He took great pride in his garden, growing and eating fresh vegetables, and kept his lawn, shrubs, and vehicles in impeccable condition. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially recalling the year he harvested three deer. He owned a conversion van and often traveled west with his brother Dave and friends. A longtime construction worker and member of the Minnesota Labor Union, he finished his career at a box factory. Above all, he cherished time with his brothers, particularly Dave, with whom he shared countless games of pool and stories of the old days in Detroit Lakes. His nickname, “Peg,” was one all the brothers carried.
Del is survived by his son Don (Tammy) Hagen and grandson Tyler; stepchildren Jerry Winters and David Winters; sister Dorothy; sister-in-law Leona Hagen; and sixteen nieces and nephews: Cindy Smiglewski, Greg Nordang, Natalie Nordang, Bradley Nordang, Lisa Nordang, Debbie Fossan, Kathy Balfany, Laurie Hagen, Susie Hagen, JoAnn Hildahl, Sharon Hagen, Tammy Dahl, Donna Pettiford, Rita Pettiford, Mark Hagen, and Karla Hagen. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepchildren Sharon Winters and Scott Winters; brothers David, Dale, Doug, and Danny Hagen; sisters Deanna Nordang and Dawn Anderson; brothers-in-law Marvin Nordang, James Anderson, and Ira Pettiford; sister-in-law Lorraine Tebben; nephew Brian Anderson; and nieces Wendy Hagen and Amy Hagen.
