Debra Lynn Van Gundy

1953 — 2026

Perry, IA

Debra “Deb” Lynn Van Gundy, 73, of Perry, passed away at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

Born on February 10, 1953, in Norfolk, Virginia, Deb was the daughter of Donald and Delores (Challands) Holcomb. She graduated from Perry High School with the Class of 1971 and spent her teen years working alongside her father at Holcomb Pharmacy, where she created many cherished memories. She later earned an associate degree from AIB College of Business and enjoyed a long career as an accountant at Signature Flight Service, retiring after more than 30 years.

On October 14, 1978, Deb married the love of her life, Ronald Van Gundy, at the United Methodist Church in Perry. Together they raised two children, Amy and Travis. A longtime member of Perry Bible Church, she gave generously of her time through bookkeeping, teaching Sunday school, and other volunteer efforts. She also volunteered at the Perry Public Library and with the Freedom for Youth after-school program for children.

Deb found joy in flowers, gardening, her beloved dogs, reading, swimming, and attending plays, musicals, and movies. Known as a social butterfly, she looked forward to weekly game nights with friends, whose steadfast support meant a great deal to her during times of illness. Family vacations were always special, and she and Ron especially treasured their travels together later in life, including a memorable trip to Hawaii. Above all, her greatest happiness came from time spent with her grandchildren, who were the center of her world.

She is survived by her daughter, Amy Van Gundy (Matt Nerdahl) and their son, Bennett Nerdahl, all of Rochester, Minnesota; her son, Travis (Ashlin) Van Gundy and their son, Liam Betten, all of West Des Moines; her beloved boxer, Ryker; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Delores Holcomb; her husband, Ron Van Gundy; her grandson, Leonidas “Leo” Van Gundy; her stillborn sister, Lori Holcomb; and two brothers, Mark Holcomb and David (Mary Ann) Holcomb.
