David M. Weis
February 16, 1937— March 10, 2026
Akron, OH
David M. Weis, Ph.D., ABPP, 89, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on March 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 16, 1937, in Taopi, Minnesota, to Raymond and Elizabeth (Kasel) Weis, David graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1955. He earned a B.A. from Loras College in 1959 and an M.Ed. in Counseling Education from Ohio University in 1960. After beginning his career as a guidance counselor in Gallipolis and later serving as guidance director at Bexley High School, he completed his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University in 1967. That same year, he joined The University of Akron, where he served as a professor in the Counseling and Special Education Department for 31 years. Known affectionately as “Doc,” he founded the university’s Counseling Psychology Program. In 1983, he was certified as a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology, and in 1984 he received the rank of Adjunct Professor from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. After retiring in 1998, he continued his work as a consulting psychologist for Shelter Care Safe Landing, Interval Brotherhood Home, and Siemens AG, while maintaining a private practice. He was honored with the Dr. Bob Smith Trailblazer Award from the Summit County ADM Board for his dedicated service to those in addiction recovery.
David’s life was rooted in faith, family, and friendship. A longtime member of St. Sebastian Parish, he served as a Eucharistic minister, coached CYO sports, and sang in the choir. He cherished the family traditions he built, including beach vacations at Kiawah Island, South Carolina, and annual fishing reunions in Bena, Minnesota. Known lovingly as “Grampy” to his four grandchildren, he was a devoted grandfather who taught them to ride bicycles, swim, fish, and drive, while guiding them toward faith-filled and honorable lives. He extended that same generous counsel to his nieces, nephews, and siblings, creating memories that will endure.
A steadfast, loving, kind, and selfless husband, father, and grandfather, David lived by his heartfelt motto to “Celebrate Life.” He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lois DeVoe Weis; daughters Elizabeth Resweber (Chris) and Allyson Weis (Adam); grandchildren Meghan and Corey Resweber and Maria and Jamie Ortiz; siblings Elaine Leif (Gene) and Cindy Enfield (Mike); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Elizabeth Weis, and siblings Ray Weis (Mary), Anita Schriever (Les), Jack Weis (Gloria), and Dwayne Weis.
