David John Gewalt

David John Gewalt

December 17, 1948 March 11, 2026

Libertyville, IL

David John Gewalt, 77, a devoted servant of Our Lord, was called to eternal rest on March 11, 2026, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament at Marytown’s adoration chapel. Born on December 17, 1948, to John and Dorothy (Woest) Gewalt, Dave grew up in Milwaukee and married his high school prom date, Barbara, on August 28, 1971. The couple shared 55 years of marriage, raising two children and ten grandchildren.

Quiet by nature, Dave was warm and deeply devoted to his family. He spoke most readily about his lifelong passion for engineering, and in later years, about his grandchildren and gardening. From his boyhood paper route through a distinguished career, he worked with diligence and humility to support those he loved. In 1977 he co-founded the civil engineering firm Gewalt-Hamilton Associates with partners Bob Hamilton, Bruce Shrake, and Mike Shrake. For 44 years he built a respected company that continues to serve its employees and clients, retiring only five years ago.

Dave was known for his gentle demeanor, warm smile, and strong work ethic. A man of deep Catholic faith, he quietly lived the virtues of humility, discipline, charity, generosity, patience, kindness, self-sacrifice, and mercy. He was the last in line for everything except perhaps confession, rarely raised his voice, reserved judgment, and centered his life around prayer, rising daily at 3 a.m. to attend Mass.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; brother Michael (Barbara) Gewalt; sister Laurie (Peter) Rausch; children Bryant (Nicole) Gewalt and Lauren (Wojciech) Kuczek; and ten grandchildren: Helena, Franciszka, John, Jozef, Mary, Peter, Elizabeth, Hannah, Isabella, and Henry. David was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and John Gewalt.
