Darrell Gene Haines
August 8, 1942— March 10, 2026
Knightstown, IN
Darrell Gene Haines, 83, of Knightstown, passed away after a life defined by service, patriotism, and quiet devotion to family and community. Born on August 8, 1942, in Anderson, he was the son of James Henley and Dorothy Kathleen Haines.
A proud United States Marine, Darrell served his country with honor and courage, attaining the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the Military Presidential Citation, an honor he carried with both humility and deep pride. After his military service, he dedicated thirty years to Chrysler Corporation while remaining actively involved in the town he loved. He served six years on the Knightstown Town Council and later as Town Board President, always working to strengthen his community.
Darrell was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge and participated in the York Rite, Scottish Rite, and the Shrine. He was also active in the Greene County Shrine, the New Castle Elks, and the Order of the Eastern Star. He took special pride in more than sixty years of membership with American Legion Post No. 152 in Knightstown, where he gave countless hours cooking for fellow veterans and supporting community events. He and his son made history at the Legion as the first father and son to serve as commanders.
Though he sometimes appeared gruff, those closest to him knew Darrell as a generous man with a kind heart. He was always ready to help those in need, whether offering a replacement American flag to someone flying a tattered one or bringing a stranded family home for Thanksgiving dinner. He found joy in simple pleasures—playing golf, listening to music, fishing, and cooking for others. A gifted storyteller, he filled rooms with humor and laughter. Above all, he was a devoted family man who cherished his wife, children, and especially his great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judith Lynn Haines of Knightstown; daughters, Jena Haines (Rodney) Schmidt and Joni Haines Tabor; son, Darren G. (Phyllis) Haines; grandchildren, Brittney (Payton) Corn, Abbi (Kyle) Haines Landes, Zachary (Emily) Tabor, Alaina Schmidt and Hunter Haines; step grandchildren, Shawn Tabor, Chad (Amy) Tabor and Brittani (Seth) Lee; half sister, Sandra Byerly; great grandchildren, Kellan, Cohen, Jett, Mavis, Cameron, Derek, Addi, Livvi, and Maverick; great-great granddaughter, Jordyn; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Guy and Alta Hattery and son-in-law, Steve Tabor.
