He was a native of Clay County and graduate of Hayesville High School. He then moved to College Park, Georgia and took a job with General Motors in Atlanta where he worked for over twenty years. Darrell opened up Carter Produce in Norcross, Georgia. Darrell returned to Hayesville and opened Carter Produce in the Peachtree community which he operated until retirement. He was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church.He was the son of the late George and Georgie Carter. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Carter.Surviving are his loving wife, Brenda Mease Carter of Hayesville, North Carolina; two sons, Bobby Carter and wife. Susan of Senoia, Georgia and Darren Carter of Hayesville, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Kameron, Kaeden, Hailey, Marley, Carley, Ian and Evan.Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, March 12, 2026 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Reverend Chris Rumfelt officiating. Interment will be in Hayesville First United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bobby Carter, Darren Carter, Terry Hatchett, W.G. Mack, Gene Pendergrass, and Tommy Hooper.The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM-1:45 PM Thursday, March 12, 2026 prior to the services.Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville in charge of all arrangements.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
