Daniel M "Danny" Brewster

Daniel Merlin Brewster, 79, of Grangeville, Idaho, passed away on March 11, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lewiston, Idaho.

Born on June 2, 1946, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, to Merlin Frank Brewster and Frances Anna (McGinnis) Brewster, Dan moved with his family to Grangeville in the summer of 1950 when his father took work in the logging industry. He attended Sts. Peter & Paul Grade School and graduated from Grangeville High School in 1965. That same year he joined the Grangeville Army National Guard, before enlisting in the United States Navy on February 14, 1966. He rose to the rank of E5 Second Class Petty Officer and served aboard the USS O’Brien, USS White Plains, and USS Ramsey with the Pacific Fleet. While aboard the USS O’Brien, the ship came under enemy fire; two shipmates were killed and four were wounded. During his active duty he visited Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Vietnam, and Hong Kong.

Dan returned to Grangeville in September 1977 and rejoined the local National Guard, serving until 1990. He worked for the Grangeville Sawmill, the U.S. Forest Service, Kelly Sports Lounge, and the Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center. A longtime member of the Grangeville Elks Lodge, he served as Exalted Ruler from 1990 to 1991. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and watching his extensive collection of more than 300 movies.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Jim Brewster, and his sister Irene Degenstein. Dan is survived by his younger brother, Michael (Debbie) Brewster of Grangeville, his sister-in-law Barbara Brewster of Lewiston, and many nieces and nephews. At his request, no service will be held. Inurnment will take place at the Grangeville Cemetery beside his parents at a later date.
