Daniel Paul Horn, age 85, of Huron, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Avera Queen of Peace in Mitchell following a short illness with Covid.
Born on December 15, 1940, in Alpena, South Dakota, Daniel was the oldest of seven children born to Erwin and Lula Mae (Schubert) Horn. His family was living on a farm near Virgil at the time of his birth. He attended grade school in Vernon Township at Halsey Grade School and graduated from Huron High School. As a senior, he enlisted in the South Dakota National Guard and served until an injury led to an honorable discharge.
In his younger years, Daniel worked as a farmhand, at Armour’s and Dakota Pork, and as a welder. He was an avid racer and found deep enjoyment in hunting, leatherwork, gunsmithing, and writing, with articles published in several magazines. On April 30, 1966, he married Jeannie Ellen McBride in Huron. The couple first lived on a farm west of Virgil before making their home in Huron.
Daniel is survived by his children, Larry Horn, Carol (Paul) Cozine, and Nancy Horn; grandchildren Tysen (Abby) Parker and Kylynn (Alex) Stahl; and great-grandchildren Daniel Parker, Hunter Parker, and Addisen Parker, all of Huron. He is also survived by his sister Pearl (Kenny) Klages of Miller; brothers Joel (Theresea) Horn of Huron and Francis (Vicki) Horn of Douglas, Wyoming; sister-in-law Diane Horn of Gillette, Wyoming; brothers-in-law George (Evie) McBride of Sioux Falls and Ben (Thetna) McBride of Hermosa; and sister-in-law Joan McBride of Huron. He was preceded in death by his wife Jeannie, his parents, Jeannie’s parents, his brothers Bruce, Roland, and Lowrance Horn, his brothers-in-law James and Larry McBride, and his son-in-law James Parker.
