Obituary

Cynthia LaRue Cheatom (née Mackall) was born January 29, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan, as the seventh child of Pharistina I. Mackall.

Cynthia developed a deep love for THE LORD from her mother, Pharistina, who instilled that same love in her children. Cynthia was baptized by Rev. David Mitcham at Oak Grove AME Church alongside her children.

Cynthia attended Martin Luther King Jr. High School located in Detroit, Michigan. She was an exceptional student, excelling in various subjects. Cynthia graduated on the day she turned 17. She then pursued further education at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing, Michigan. A lifelong advocate for learning and education, Cynthia motivated her family, friends, and others to pursue their academic goals.

Following her time at MSU, Cynthia returned to Detroit, got married, and welcomed her children – Raymond A. Cheatom, Jr. and Syreeta D. Cheatom. Her children were the greatest joys of her life.

Cynthia worked for the Detroit Police Department for 25 years, earning numerous awards and commendations along the way. She also made lasting friendships on the job.

This is where the nickname “CC” comes into play… Outside of her family and work, Cynthia was often called CC by her friends. CC had a wide range of interests, particularly enjoying card games (mostly spades and bid whist) and shooting pool. She was highly skilled in these activities and others. CC also liked backgammon and puzzles, including crosswords and Sudoku. Music was another passion of hers, especially blues, country, and jazz. CC had a talent for artistic pursuits, being able to draw, paint, and mold. She also enjoyed watching Antiques Roadshow and classic westerns on television.

Cynthia departed this life on February 25, 2026. She was preceded in death by her mother, Pharistina I. Mackall, along with three brothers: Darryl Mackall, Clarence Mackall, and Richard Mackall.

She leaves behind cherished memories with her children– Raymond A. Cheatom, Jr. and Dr. Syreeta D. Cheatom; her siblings – Pharistina Bullock, Phyliss (Colon) Craft, Vendella (Bruce) Brunson, Christopher (Joyce) Collins, Kimberlyn Collins, and Melissa Taylor; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws, extended family, and countless friends.
