Elberton, GA
Curtis Eugene Algood, 89, of Sunset Drive in Elberton, passed away on the morning of March 13, 2026, at Elbert Memorial Hospital. He was the devoted husband of 61 years to Sandra Cornelia Gunter Algood.
Born at home in Elberton on July 24, 1936, Curtis was the youngest of three children of the late Thomas Hoyt Algood and Jewel Christine Jones Algood. A 1955 graduate of Elberton High School, he played in the very first football game ever held in the Granite Bowl during his sophomore year. He served faithfully in the United States Army and was a longtime member of Fortsonia Baptist Church.
For most of his life, Curtis worked as an electrician. Even after retirement, he remained active, serving in security at both Elbert Memorial Hospital and Richard B. Russell State Park, and later as a jailer at the Elbert County Detention Center. He loved camping and was widely known for his homemade Brunswick stew.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Sandra; their three sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Gwen Algood of Hartwell, Craig and Missy Algood of Elberton, and Chad and Crystal Algood of Elberton; grandchildren Jake Algood, Justin Algood, Kaytlyn Mills and her husband McCloud, and Lauren Fleeman; great-grandchildren Avery Algood and Memphis Mills; and sister-in-law Patricia Algood. He was preceded in death by his sister, Polly Pitts and her husband Bobby, and his brother, Milford Algood.
