Craig Michael Clayton
April 17, 1947— March 8, 2026
Rockford, IL
Craig Michael Clayton, 78, of Rockford, died peacefully surrounded by his family on March 8, 2026. Born on April 17, 1947 in Streator, Illinois, he was the son of Charles Russell and Constance Lorraine (Noon) Clayton. Mike graduated from Streator Township High School before being drafted into the Army, where he served as a medic during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he used the G.I. Bill to attend Rock Valley College, earning an Associate’s Degree, and later graduated from Northern Illinois University, where he met his future wife, Kathleen J. Wheeler.
Mike enjoyed a long and fulfilling accounting career at Sundstrand, where he worked for 38 years and formed many lasting friendships. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished time spent with his family. He found simple joy in gathering with friends over a beer and lived by the optimistic spirit of his favorite song, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen; children, Nicholas (Laura) Clayton and Natalie (Eric) Mowbray; and granddaughter, Hailey. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Tom and Jon, as well as nephews Mark and Eric.
