Charleston, AR

Cora Ann Haynes Weir, 88, of Charleston passed away following a fall on March 13, 2026. She was born on May 9, 1937 in Charleston, Arkansas. She attended Charleston High School and the University of Arkansas and graduated with a degree in education. She briefly taught Home Economics and then found her true calling in elementary education. She taught 2nd grade in the Lavaca Schools and then moved to the first grade at Charleston Elementary School where she was passionate about teaching children to read. She taught in Charleston for nearly 50 years before retiring to help her husband with his fun retirement job of farming and cattle ranching.

She married Bonner Weir on May 8, 1959. They were well known for still going on dates and holding hands whenever they walked together. Their children’s friends knew them as parents who were not only still married but actually still liked each other. Together they raised three daughters.

Cora was a member of First Baptist Church of Charleston, Arkansas where she played piano, organ, and sang in the choir. She loved her church and her faith in God brought her much peace and hope for the future.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Brotherton Funeral Home Chapel in Charleston, with Rev. Jim Gifford and Pastor Artie Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories in Charleston, under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home and Flower Shop in Charleston.

She is survived by her two daughters, Anne Theurich (Michael) of Springfield, Missouri and Sara Roland (Mark) of Greenbrier, Arkansas and son in-law, Randy Rhea of Little Rock. She was most proud of her greatly loved granddaughter, Anna Roland of Fayetteville, Arkansas. She is also survived by her other “daughters” Amy Evans and Becky Sargeant and her beloved friends Betty Ewing and Billie Shelby. Finally she leaves behind two brothers, Reed Haynes (Barbara) of Charleston and Tom Haynes (Mary) of Fort Smith, as well as a host of loved ones and dear friends who made her life richer because of their presence.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Bonner Weir; daughter, Nancy Rhea; and her parents, Herman and Verna Haynes.

Pallbearers are James Corley, Mike Haynes, Lane Dooly, Leroy Womack, Bruce Womack, and Carl Underwood.

Family will visit with friends an hour prior to the service at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff at Mercy Hospital Fort Smith and her host of wonderful friends who adopted her into their families and loved her like she was their own.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations to either the Nancy Weir Rhea Memorial Scholarship Fund at UAMS, https://give.uams.edu/give/604846/#!/donation/checkout Support Our Oncologic Nurses, or the First Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 297, Charleston, AR, 72933.
