Chicago, IL

Clifford Whitehouse Jr. passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Born to Clifford and Ima, he was raised in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood alongside his five siblings, Wanda (Terry), Phil (Cathy), Jim (Debra), Paul (Mary Sarah), and Theresa (Harold).

In 1973, Cliff met the love of his life, Arlene (née Powers). The couple celebrated fifty years of marriage last July. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and deep friendships, supporting one another through every joy and challenge. Cliff was a loving and dedicated father to Elaine (Michael), Cliff (Kasia), and Bridget (Matt). He stayed up late helping with science projects, volunteered with the scouts, and served as president of the local school council. He worked hard and made many sacrifices to send his children to Catholic high schools and on to college.

His favorite word was “grandpa,” and he was a devoted grandfather to Matthew, Griffin, Graham, Charlotte, and Oliver. He cherished cheering at their games, reading the same books over and over, and sharing quiet moments over ice cream. Known as a baby whisperer and world-class hugger, he filled his grandchildren’s lives with warmth and presence.

Cliff was a cherished brother-in-law to Bud (the late Marie), Pat (the late Jack), Bob (Pam), Joe (Jackie), Ron, and Dave (Denise). He will be deeply missed by his extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and countless dear friends. He found joy in music, drawing, puzzles, and Sudoku, and remained a lifelong Chicago sports fan who always believed “this year would be the year.”

Guided by his faith, Cliff treated others with the kindness and care he saw in Jesus. He volunteered for many years at St. Barbara parish, serving with the Holy Name Society, as a Eucharistic minister, and in the choir. He now returns home to Christ, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering devotion to his family.
