Dalton, GA

Clarence Richard “Dick” Coleman, 80, of Dalton, Georgia, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Hamilton Medical Center.

Born on December 19, 1945, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dick grew up working on his family’s dairy farm and developed a lifelong passion for sports. In 1968, he and his wife Elaine moved to Dalton, where he played a key role in building a nationally recognized basketball program at Dalton Junior College. Known affectionately as “Coach C,” he guided the Roadrunners to several national championship contending seasons and maintained close ties with his players and the program for decades. Later in life, he became lovingly known throughout the community as “Poppy C.”

A man of deep and evident faith, Dick was a devoted member of The River Community Church. He openly shared stories of God’s faithfulness and healing, encouraged those around him, and never missed an opportunity to witness to others. He embodied the qualities of a godly husband, father, and grandfather, leaving a lasting impression of kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and unconditional love on everyone he met. Dick was happiest when surrounded by his family, whether cheering for his grandchildren from the stands or proudly attending their recitals and events.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Christine Coleman; his sister, Martha; brother-in-law Terry Heath; and sister-in-law Jane Coleman. Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine Parsley Coleman; his children, Dr. Sean (Kathryn) Coleman and Renee Coleman Golden; his grandchildren, Sarah Kate (Harrison) McDermott, Caroline (James) Boone, Lily Claire Golden, Meg Coleman, Conrad Coleman, and Carter Golden; his brothers, Brandt Coleman and Johnny (Donna) Coleman; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
