Clarence "Clare" Gubler

September 26, 1955 March 13, 2026

St. George, UT

Clarence Leslie Gubler of St. George, Utah, passed away surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with Multiple System Atrophy. Born on September 26, 1955, in St. George to Ted Laub Gubler and Joyce Wilcox Snow, Clare grew up in Middleton, where he spent his childhood building underground huts, riding his minibike, and camping with his family. He attended West Elementary, Woodward Junior High, and graduated from Dixie High School in 1973. It was there he met the love of his life, Alicia Ashman. They married on August 21, 1975, in the Manti Utah Temple and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Together, Clare and Alicia built a beautiful life and raised four children: Lindsay, Courtney, Alex, and Ashlyn. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and their families. After working as a driver for Rocky Mountain Produce, he found his calling in the restaurant industry. He began as a line cook at Denny’s, advanced to general manager of Shoney’s in 1990, and in 2003 fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening Durango’s Mexican Grill. Through the restaurant, he served tens of thousands of meals and became a beloved figure in the St. George community, known for his generosity, attention to detail, and the way he made every customer feel seen and cared for.

Clare cherished his family above all, attending games, recitals, musicals, and family trips. He was quick with a compliment, swift to forgive, and served as a steady, wise foundation for those around him. He held a deep love for his Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, and found special fulfillment teaching three- and four-year-olds in Primary. Even as his health declined, he faced every challenge with kindness and quiet positivity.

Clare is survived by his devoted wife, Alicia; his children Lindsay Gardner (Mason), Courtney (Mandi), Alex, and Ashlyn; eight grandchildren, Macie, Camden, Ivie, Ainsley, Ali, Dylan, Sophie, and Brem; his mother, Joyce Snow; his brothers Steven, Curtis, and Doug; and his father-in-law, Nolan Ashman. He was preceded in death by his father, Ted Gubler; his mother-in-law, Yvonne Ashman; and his brother, Richard Gubler. His family will forever carry the imprint of his integrity, generosity, and love.
