Clarence D McIlvain

Clarence D. McIlvain, age 84, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away on March 3, 2026, at The University of Kansas Health System-Olathe in Olathe, Kansas. Born on October 9, 1941, in Madison, Kansas, Clarence was the beloved son of Robert Earl and Mary Elizabeth (Lewis) McIlvain. He grew up in a family that moved frequently, spending his formative years in various towns across Kansas, including Madison, Kechi, Lane, graduating with the class of 1960, and Centropolis.

On December 4, 1981, Clarence married Karen (Gillespie) McIlvain in Ottawa, Kansas, beginning a partnership that would endure for many cherished years. His commitment to his country was evident during his service in the Naval Air Reserves, demonstrating a dedication that extended beyond himself to those he served.

A devoted member of the community, Clarence was an esteemed member of both the Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star for 50 years, where he contributed significantly to the fellowship and support within these organizations.

Clarence had a deep appreciation for music, which manifested in his remarkable talent as a saxophone player. Beginning his musical journey at the tender age of 16, music remained a lifelong passion that brought joy to both him and those fortunate enough to hear him play. Wherever he went he was asked if he had his saxophone with him, and he did because he carried it in the trunk. Beyond music, he found happiness in nature through camping, fishing, bird watching, and the delightful pursuit of feeding squirrels. Clarence shared a unique bond with the local wildlife, often having squirrels eat from his hands. Earning the nick name of Squirrel Whisperer from his family. His enthusiasm for sports was equally vibrant; he was a dedicated fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and the K.U. Jayhawks, passionately supporting his teams.

In his passing, Clarence leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his wife of the home, Karen McIlvain; daughters Kimberly McIlvain of Lane, Kansas; Kristina White of Osawatomie, Kansas; Wanda Turner (Gary) of Ottawa, Kansas; Anita Hendricks (Mark) of Ottawa, Kansas; and Jacki Glendening (Bret) of Osawatomie, Kansas; as well as son Carson Maxwell (Shai) of Colorado. A sister Earlene Schulz (Jim) of Rantoul, Kansas; and brother Dennis McIlvain, Ottawa, Kansas, and an unofficial adopted daughter, Dawn Tegtmeyer, Ottawa, Kansas. Additionally, he is cherished by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, along with what he affectionately referred to as "a gazillion nieces and nephews."

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; brother David Lee; sister-in-law Lois McIlvain; and grandson Levi Mills.

A memorial visitation will take place at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa, Kansas, on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM. The family warmly invites all to bring along any memories or humorous stories of Clarence, with the last thirty minutes of the gathering reserved for those who wish to share special memories.

His legacy of love, music, and community service will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
