Clara Mavity

Clara Jane Mavity, age 87, of Lafayette, formerly of Rossville, passed away on March 12, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on September 6, 1938, in Hillsburg, Indiana, to Owen and Velma (Miller) Reed, she grew up in Rossville, where she graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1956. On September 6, 1958, in Frankfort, Indiana, she married Richard “Dick” Mavity, who survives her after 67 years of marriage.

Clara worked in the Purdue Union Business Office until her retirement in 1992. She found great joy in fishing, especially during the couple’s many trips to Minnesota, and she was an avid reader with a particular fondness for James Patterson novels. She also loved playing cards and crocheting, but her deepest devotion was reserved for her family. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Richard “Dick” Mavity; daughters, Kelly (Jim) Newton and Tracy Mavity; grandchildren, Tyler (Jordan) Jones, Dylan (Cheyanne) Allen, Hailee Newton, and Gabbie (Eric) Hamilton; great-grandchildren, Finleigh, Lainey, and Isla Hamilton, Harper, Hadley, and Hayden Jones, Esther, Henry, Elliot, and Beau Allen; sister, Katie (Dewey) Tipmore; sister-in-law, Dellene Reed; and many nieces and nephews.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Robert (Norma) Reed, Richard Reed, and Barbara (Pete) Hamm.
