Christopher Pierce "Bopp" Mefferd

March 24, 1947 March 2, 2026

Des Moines, IA

Christopher Pierce Mefferd, 78, of Des Moines, passed away on March 2, 2026, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

Chris grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University. He began his career working alongside his father at J.B. Mefferd Co., designing and building custom countertops and cabinets throughout the Des Moines area. After his father retired, Chris continued the family business as Mefferd Cabinets-Counters Plus in Urbandale. He later founded Centurion Security Services and, before retiring, served as a security officer at Camp Dodge. In 1970, he joined the Iowa National Guard’s 186th Military Police Company, serving more than 20 years and retiring in 1992 at the rank of Sergeant First Class.

Above all, Chris cherished his wife and family. A devoted husband for 55 years, he loved volunteering and participating in his children’s activities. He had a deep affection for dogs, especially the family’s beloved Irish. An avid craftsman, he enjoyed home projects and time in his woodworking shop. Chris maintained a lifelong passion for technology, electronics, radios, and computers. His love of aviation began in his youth when he earned a private pilot’s license, and he held a particular fascination with the P-38 Lightning fighter plane, which he continued to enjoy through flight simulators. He was also a skilled marksman who enjoyed deer hunting.

Chris accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior on January 5, 1981, and faithfully served God for the next 45 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, James B. and Jane Mefferd. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Mefferd; his children, Scott Mefferd (Merie), Kim Elmore (Aaron), and Michelle Wiedmann (Ed); his grandchildren, Shad Kobylasz (Cheyenne), Mariah and Cassadie Mefferd, and Ben, Hudson, and Gianna Wiedmann; his great-grandchildren, Kyren and Asher Kobylasz; his brother, Jim Mefferd (Marti); nephew, Michael Mefferd (Bekki); and niece, Mary Mefferd.
