Christine James Karon

Christine James Karon, age 95, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026. For the past three years she had resided at Royal Cape Cod Nursing Home in Bourne, having lived for seventy-three years in Wareham, Massachusetts.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 30, 1930, Christine was the youngest of five children of the late James and Cleopatra “Patra” (Babalas) Karon. She cherished her close and loving Greek family and carried the lessons of her upbringing throughout her life. Watching her father work long hours in his bakery and her mother raise five children left a deep impression, and she often drew strength from her mother’s Greek phrases and words of wisdom.

Christine developed a lifelong love of baking while working in her father’s bakery, where she also learned the values of hard work, perseverance, self-reliance, and resilience. After raising her family and working in her former husband’s family restaurant, she held positions at New England Life Insurance in Boston and in retail. At the age of fifty-five she opened Christine’s Clothing, a women’s apparel shop in Sandwich, Massachusetts. For the next thirty-two years she and her daughter Barbara created a warm, welcoming, and highly personalized shopping experience for their customers. She retired at eighty-seven and spent her later years enjoying baking, reading, time with family, and the companionship of her grand dog, Niko.

She is survived by her son, George P. Makrys and his wife Carol Maley Makrys, and her daughter, Barbara C. Deneen and her husband Kevin Deneen. She was predeceased by her sisters, Julie Koulet and Marcine Karon, and her brothers, Angelo Karon and Peter Karon.
