Chris L. Mayes, 65, of Hutchinson, died March 11, 2026, at his home. Born November 24, 1960, in Hutchinson to Curtis and Emmagene Mayes, Chris grew up with a passion for racing and spent many years competing in stock car events at Hutchinson tracks through the 1990s and early 2000s. He also enjoyed playing softball and basketball. At age 14, he traveled to the World Scout Jamboree, visiting Norway, Denmark, and Sweden—an experience that remained a highlight of his youth.

Chris worked for many years at Cargill Incorporated before retiring from Collins Corporation. In his free time, he found joy in golfing, bowling, and woodworking. He had a deep love for his family and cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren. His big heart extended especially to animals, particularly his beloved dogs, Midnight and Lexi.

On May 4, 1979, Chris married Brenda Postier in Hutchinson. The couple shared nearly 47 years of marriage filled with love and companionship.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Mayes; children, Crystal (Gary) Pulliam of Hutchinson and William “Willie” (Sheridan) Mayes of Lenexa; grandchildren, Cheyenne (Bryar) Higgins, Breanna (Joey) Milbrandt, Kaylee Mayes (Julian King), Curtis Mayes, and Mercy Stauffer; three great-grandchildren with two more on the way; and sisters, Debrah Brown of Hutchinson and Elizabeth “Beth” Andsager of Nickerson. He was preceded in death by his parents.
