Cheryl Denise “Cherri” Chapman Summers, 62, passed away on March 14, 2026, at Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Selma, Alabama, surrounded by her husband, daughter, and mother.
Cherri faced more than a decade of chronic kidney disease with remarkable courage and determination. Even after becoming a double amputee, she continued to push forward each day for the people she loved most—her husband David, her daughter Kayla, and her beloved grandchildren. She met every challenge with quiet bravery and an unwavering will to remain present for her family.
In healthier years, Cherri found joy in cooking, creating a warm home, and spending time outdoors. She loved the beach and soaking up the summer sun. As her health made routines more difficult, she cherished spontaneous day trips with David, her husband of 32 years and dearest friend. Their marriage was marked by deep love and steadfast devotion.
Nothing brought Cherri greater happiness than her grandchildren. She was overjoyed when Rhett was born and worked hard to improve her health so she could share in his life. She later welcomed granddaughter Raegan, whose bright personality filled her with delight. Cherri treasured family Sundays when everyone gathered, watching the children play and soaking in those precious moments. She also adored her son-in-law Jonathan, who could always make her laugh and talk for hours about movies.
She was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Eugene Chapman; step-father, B.C. Moore; and brother-in-law, Dale Nichols.
She is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, John David Summers; her daughter, Kayla Summers (Jonathan) Orvis; her cherished grandchildren, Rhett Lane and Raegan Orvis; her mother, Barbara Jane Chapman Moore; her siblings, Steve (Susan) Chapman, Susie Chapman Nichols, and Danny (Robin) Chapman; nieces and nephews, Colton Chapman, Tanner Nichols, Gracie Chapman, Paul Chapman, and Daniel Chapman; as well as many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
Cherri will be remembered for her strength, her gentle and loving heart, and her complete devotion to her family. Though she endured many hardships, she never stopped fighting or loving those closest to her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
