b. January 1, 1932
Trevose, PA
Charles J. Swartz, aged 94, lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication, curiosity, and deep devotion to family. Born in rural Pennsylvania in January 1932 to Aaron and Sarah, he spent his early years surrounded by relatives and beloved dogs, attending a one-room schoolhouse where his mother taught. A move to Baltimore broadened his horizons, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Rita. The couple married in secret at 18 and appeared on the television show “Bride and Groom” a year later, keeping their first ceremony from their parents. Together they worked tirelessly, first supporting Rita through nursing school and then Charles through his studies. He earned a PhD in Pharmacology in 1956.
Charles and Rita welcomed their daughter Wendy Susan in 1960 and son Scott Lewis in 1965. They raised their family first in Springfield and later in Connecticut. Charles enjoyed a long career with several pharmaceutical companies, where he was known for his leadership and for encouraging those around him. Each summer the family gathered at Abakee, where Charles taught generations of children to waterski and sail. He cherished the water and the memories created there.
In his later years, Charles traveled widely, played golf regularly, and took great joy in his role as PopPop to Joel, Ben, Sydney, Samantha, Aaron, and Samuel. He delighted in telling stories to the little ones and sharing the traditions of Jewish holidays and celebrations. He was especially proud to become a great-grandfather to Riley Grace. Charles will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of blue crabs, fine dining, and a well-made cocktail, as well as the unmistakable twinkle in his blue eyes.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild, who will carry forward the warmth and spirit of his remarkable life.
