Deible (Charlie) passed away gently in his sleep on March 12th in his home in Lafayette, IN. Charlie was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1945 in Washington D.C. to Laura (Kaiser) and Robert (Bob) Deible. He grew up in Gary, IN and then later moved to Merrillville, IN graduating from Merrillville High School in 1963. Charlie earned a BA from Purdue University in 1968 before joining the Army where he served from 1968 until 1969. He was discharged honorably as a conscientious objector. Law school followed and Charlie graduated from Valparaiso University School of Law with a JD in 1973. Charlie worked first as a deputy prosecutor in the felony division of the Lake County prosecutor's office from 1973 until 1978, then became a referee in the Lake County Juvenile Court from 1979 till 1984. In 1984 Charlie assumed the duties of City Attorney of Hammond, IN which was a political appointment, thereafter, he maintained a private law practice until he moved to Lafayette, IN where he married Lafayette School Corporation art teacher, Stephanie Funcheon in 2003, who survives. Charlie is also survived by his daughters Kristin (Ryan) Ripley; Lara Kotys; his sister Carolyn Mikovich; and his six grandchildren Dawson, Holden, and Emmalyn Ripley; Kyla Deible; Miles and Mason Kotys. He is predeceased by his parents Laura and Bob Deible, and his beloved brother, Gary. Charlie was an avid bridge player and member of the American Bridge League attaining the rank of Life Master in 1984. Golf was another passion of Charlie's and he played all of the various courses in Indiana where he lived. He scored three holes in one in his playing days. A celebration of life for Charlie will be held on Sunday, March 29th from 2 to 4 pm at Inspired Fire Glass Studio, 2124 IN-25, Lafayette, IN 47909To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
