Cross City, FL

Charles Marvin Elton Jr., known to all as Chuck, of Cross City, Florida, passed away on March 11 at the age of 71 after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.

A proud graduate of Dixie County High School, Chuck served his country in the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1977 as a Sergeant and Medical Service Specialist, with assignments in Okinawa, Korea, and Omaha, Nebraska. He carried deep pride in his military service and the opportunity it gave him to care for others. Upon returning home, he devoted much of his life to his community through emergency services, working as an EMT and firefighter, both as a volunteer and professionally. He later served as Division Chief of 911 for Dixie County Emergency Services, strengthening the county’s response systems so help could reach residents quickly. Chuck also served as Information Technology Director for Dixie County Schools, where he applied his technical skill and natural problem-solving ability to support the district’s technology needs.

Chuck’s passion for photography began in high school, where he learned to develop photos in the darkroom. He became well known throughout the community for the thousands of photographs he took at the Suwannee River Fair, capturing children in 4-H and FFA proudly standing beside the animals they had raised. He also photographed Dixie County High School sports, supporting local athletes and preserving meaningful moments for students and their families. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting for antiques, restoring them with care, and working with wood. A lifelong tinkerer, he took pleasure in building and repairing things, including assembling computers from scratch. Those who knew him remembered his constant preparedness, always ready with the right tool or piece of knowledge, often pulled from the back of his truck, and his quick wit and perfectly timed jokes.

Above all, Chuck cherished his grandchildren and moved to be closer to them. His home was a gathering place filled with video games, laughter, and everyday moments that meant the world to him and to them.

He is survived by his daughter Courtney Goodin and her husband Hal Goodin, and their children Mia, Westin, and Ellie; his daughter Kristin Piper and her husband Brendon Piper, and their child Kylie; Gail Rogers, who remained a beloved part of the Elton family; and his longtime friends Tank and Debbie Lee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Elton and Mary Alice McIntyre, and by his brothers Lee Elton and Rick Elton.

Chuck will be remembered for his lifelong dedication to service, his readiness to help in any situation, and the countless memories he preserved through his photography, becoming an enduring part of the community he loved. A private family gathering will be held at a later date to honor his wish to have his ashes scattered at the Suwannee River. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Chuck Elton Service Scholarship Fund in his honor.
