Charles Eugene Petry, a devoted husband, father, and man of deep faith, passed away on March 12, 2026, at the Peabody Healthcare Center in North Manchester, Indiana. Born on May 3, 1936, in Mogadore, Ohio, to Elden M. and Ruth L. (Beardshaw) Petry, he lived a life defined by dedication, varied talents, and an abiding love for his family and the Lord.
Charles graduated from Anderson High School in 1954 and attended Manchester College. He met Brenda Whitcraft at his father’s revival meeting, and their relationship blossomed into a loving marriage on July 12, 1959. For sixty-six years, they shared a strong partnership while raising their three children.
His career began as a Church of the Brethren minister, a calling that reflected his strong faith and desire to serve. He later found great passion in the automotive field, working as a mechanic, manager, and business owner. He also served as roundhouse foreman at Burlington Northern Railroad and explored opportunities in RV sales, maintenance, and insurance. Known for his booming speaking and singing voice, Charles often shared gospel music with those around him. He possessed a keen mechanical mind, whether repairing cars, working on trains, or fixing things around the home. His hearty laugh and sense of humor brought warmth and joy to family and friends. Above all, he loved the Lord deeply and found fulfillment in reading and teaching the Christian faith. He was a longtime member of Oak Park Community Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he worshipped on Sundays.
Charles will be remembered as a generous, kind-hearted man who placed his family and faith at the center of his life. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Petry of North Manchester; his children, Debra (Brett) Acker of York, Pennsylvania, Kathy (Thom) Baker of Wallkill, New York, and Stephen (Janine) Petry of Huntington, Indiana; twelve grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lynn Shinkle.
